If a .ie domain is not renewed by its expiry date, it goes through the stages below. Days are counted from the expiry date.
The .ie expiry timeline
- Up to 30 days after expiry: the domain keeps working and can be renewed at the normal renewal price.
- 30 days after expiry, the domain is suspended: any website and email using it stop working. It can still be renewed at the normal price until day 40, and we reactivate it once it is renewed.
- 40 days after expiry, the domain is deleted and enters a 30-day redemption period: it can still be recovered during this period, but a restore fee applies in addition to the normal renewal fee.
- 70 days after expiry, the redemption period ends: the domain can no longer be recovered, and it is released for anyone to register approximately 5 days later.
Avoiding the restore fee
Renewing on time avoids the restore fee and any interruption to your website and email. If you have a domain coming up for renewal, please check that your contact and payment details are up to date in your SmartHost account, where you can also review and manage your renewals at any time.
